Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass - the gold standard of bariatric surgery with 60-80% excess body weight loss.

Gastric bypass creates a small stomach pouch (about 30ml) and re-routes the small intestine to this pouch. Food bypasses the majority of the stomach and the upper part of the small intestine, dramatically reducing calorie absorption.
Stomach division - A small egg-sized pouch is created from the upper stomach.
Bypass creation - The small intestine is divided and re-connected to the new pouch (Roux limb).
Biliopancreatic limb - Digestive juices flow to meet food further down, reducing calorie absorption.
Recovery - 2-3 days hospital stay, return to normal activity within 3-4 weeks.
